The Pretenders - "The Wait"
Chrissie Hynde is the real stuff, and "The Wait" shows what a powerhouse she and the Pretenders were right out of the gate in 1978. A solid riff that plays loose, but holds you hostage in between runs while Hynde clips every word of the verses through her teeth. Only when the chorus kicks in can you exhale just a little bit. You can listen to it forever. Other favorite bits: The little ambulance-siren wail before the second verse, and the "Hm" just before the bridge, like Hynde is deciding if we deserve more.
